Haspah on Monday

Haspah is about to be married!

This bubbly young lady had searched for a dentist to sort out her smile but kept coming up with the same answer.

“It’s too difficult.” The dentists told Haspah, “You’ll need to take out many teeth and will need to go without teeth for 3 months!”

Poor Haspah was shattered.

She is about to get married to Mukhzaini in a few months!

She finally found our blog and wrote in … but I did not reply her! We were in Bangkok for our clinic celebration trip.

Haspah posted on the Facebook Page that she had tried to contact us … fortunately a patient wrote a post saying that the entire Team was away and we’d back on Monday.

Sorry again Haspah .. I did place signage in all our clinics a month earlier but forgot to post one on the Facebook Page! … duh, silly me.

Anyway, Haspah finally got in touch with us last week and came in on Monday with her fiance.

I took a look at her and said that she had a difficult case (!!!). Haspah sighed, “Yes I know, I have been to many dentists and they all say they can’t help.”

“I work in the front-line talking to people all the time and I am about to get married too! My fiance doesn’t mind my smile but I am very self conscious when ever I smile.” She said.

“And I think it’s getting worse!”

Haspah is in her early twenties … “I really, really want to help her get her dream smile!” I thought to myself.

I took a deep breathe and told her that doing orthodontics for her was going to be a very tricky and long process … her gums were not in good shape, some of her teeth were mobile/moving too.

Braces may make everything worse for a while.

The tilt of her front teeth was way too far to do anything with veneers … crowning her teeth will not help her gums or reduce the bone formation … sigh.

I told her that I felt she should consider taking out her front teeth … yes, it was drastic but well, her teeth were so shaky and would probably not survive braces.

Haspah looked straight at me and said, “Yes, I know … I am ready to take them out.”

That’s when she told me that the other dentists told her it would take 3 months before she could have dentures made … meanwhile she had to go toothless!

I told her that it was not necessary … that I promised her that she would have a beautiful smile immediately … but I had to do both her upper teeth and lower teeth at the same time.

I promised her that I would craft the smile for her myself and make sure the technician does a beautiful job … I so, so, so understand how big a decision it is for her.

It’s HUGE step for Haspah … I am so present to how much trust she is placing in me to deliver my promise.

Today was the big day.

Today, just 4 days from the first time we met and discussed the treatment options, Haspah got her dream smile.

She was so, so nervous … Mukhzaini was there too, to give her moral support.

We did everything in just 30 minutes.

When Haspah saw her reflection in the mirror she began to cry … I wanted to cry too … she was so happy.

Haspah finally got her dream smile.

Sheila before

Sheila is about to join her husband in Australia. A newly-married bride, Sheila was excited about starting life anew down under with her architect husband.

She’s planning to leave at the end of the month and will return again in August for her brother’s wedding.

Sheila has a huge generous smile and unfortunately her lower teeth were quite uneven, which made her a tad self-conscious whenever she smiled.

Sheila considered having braces done … I explained that it was going to be really hard for her to find an orthodontist who would continue with her treatment if she started with placing the brackets here …

After much discussion, I told her that I’d “show” her how she’d look like if she decided on correcting her smile with composite veneers.

I explained to her that I would create her smile with composites but I would not ‘prepare’ her teeth first … this means that she could see the end result and then I could remove the veneers as they were not bonded on yet.

I took her ‘before’ photos … did the mock and gave her the mirror.

“Wow!”

Sheila decided then and there to go for composite veneers!

Today, Sheila came in for her makeover … she had taken the morning off and planned to go to work later with her brand new dream smile.

She settled down and I started with her uppers ….

They were pretty straight forward to do so hardly took any time at all!

The lowers were harder … they always are as the teeth are smaller and slimmer … there’s also the tighter space because of the lip and tongue.

Her lowers took a lot longer than her uppers … but the best part was she didn’t need any injections as there was absolutely no pain!

I checked and re-checked her biting surfaces … a thorough polish and shine later … then at last she was ready for the magic mirror.

“I’m going to smile wide when I Skype with my husband tonight.” she laughed.

“It’s going to be a surprise as I just told him I’m going to see the dentist.”

Ah … and smile wide when you go to work to Sheila!

Fieza before

Fieza’s friend Hasniza had her makeover done first! It was Fieza who found this blog but Hasniza beat her to getting her makeover!

So when Hasniza told her it was painless and showed her brand new smile to Fieza, she made her appointment and checked out the clinic location on Sunday to make sure she would be on time and not get lost.

Fieza came in today with her good friend and ex-roommate Inaz.

She needed the moral support as she was very nervous.

I told Fieza that she would need to re-do some fillings besides the 4 composite veneers to create the beautiful smile.

Fieza had what we dentists call an ‘open bite’, that is her upper teeth don’t touch her lowers … that added to her discoloured teeth.

It wasn’t too difficult … just a little tricky as I needed to balance the shapes of her teeth so they’d look natural without looking over long.

I chatted with Elsa whilst Fieza had her makeover done … that was when I was told they both were about to get married next month!

And within a week of each other too!

Talk about best friends having similar experiences together!

When we were done Fieza smiled delightedly at Inaz …no more discoloured teeth and no more gaps!!!

I just had to tease Elsa, “Fieza has her beautiful smile all ready for her wedding!”

Zul before

Zul is a very busy executive! He had to squeeze in the time to have his usual clean up before flying off to London for work.

After we did the clean up, Zul asked if I could improve his smile.

His front teeth were a little protruded and spaces had begun to show up as his gums had receded.

“It isn’t hard to do really.” I told him.

“I just need to reshape things a little … why not come back in when you return to Malaysia and we’ll sort it out once and for all.”

Zul agreed and we booked in the appointment.

Sometimes a smile just needs a little tweaking to make a huge difference.

In Zul’s case, I also changed the colour of his smile so not only did the gaps and slight protrusion disappear but he had an instant ‘whiter’ smile too!

When Zul saw his new smile he was super pleased!

Nadia before

Nadia was a referral from a patient who lives in Australia, Imelda.

Nadia who also lives in Perth stopped over in Kuala Lumpur for a few days in transit to her holiday in Penang.

Taking the opportunity, Imelda emailed me to set up the appointment for her friend Nadia for a makeover.

Nadia and her husband, Don, came in first thing in the morning … I had a few hours to do her makeover before they fly off to Penang for the next leg of their holiday in Malaysia.

Nadia explained that she had diabetes which ran in her family, when I examined her.

“Aaah,’ I said, “that explains why despite your relatively good dental hygiene, the teeth are moving and some teeth are shaky!”

I explained to them how periodontitis (that’s the inflammation of her gums in dental-speak) takes hold and what I was going to do (clean up the deep calculus) so that she could maintain her gums and teeth well.

I told her that the makeover would actually make it easier for her to keep everything in check.

I started up with a good clean up first and chatted with both Nadia and Don whilst I worked.

It turned out that they run a dry cleaning business back in Perth! We talked about living in Perth and how different the world is with all the technology that is available these days.

I had my work cut out for me as Nadia’s gums bled so easily … sigh, I would have to be very diligent as the bleeding messes up my magic wand …

Nadia did not have any pain at all as her gums bled even when she brushed her teeth but it meant I had to work much slower than I normally could as I had to be extra careful.

I fussed over her makeover too as Nadia and Don were not going to be passing through KL on their way back to Perth.

I had to make sure she’d be OK and could eat normally as i wasn’t going to have a second chance to adjust anything before she returns to Australia!

At last I finished …

“I feel so strange!” Nadia said.

I explained that she would feel strange … “shape shock” we call it … because her lips and tongue were used to gaps and spaces … but it will last for only a day or two.

Don couldn’t believe his eyes! “What did you do?” he asked smiling.

I said, “It was done just with composite veneers. No pulling out of teeth, or shifting teeth, that’s why there were no injections or pain!”

Nadia and he had to rush back to their hotel to get their bags and catch their plane to Penang, so we said our quick goodbyes and off they went.

I think Nadia was still in shock!
